About us

Cape Breton University (CBU) is a primarily undergraduate public co-educational university in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada. It is the only postsecondary degree-granting institution on Cape Breton Island and within the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. The university is enabled by the Cape Breton University Act passed by the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. CBU was formerly facilitated by the University College of Cape Breton Act (amended). On May 27, 1995, the Coat of Arms of the University College of Cape Breton was registered with the Canadian Heraldic Authority.

More than 5,500 full-time and part-time students from local, regional, and national locations attend Cape Breton University. CBU also serves as the academic home to over 2,000 international students from over 50 nations. Since 2018, Cape Breton University has been ranked 19th in MacLean's Primarily Undergraduate university rankings, and 46th in its reputational survey for 2021. In 2011, CBU was a small comprehensive university with over $3 million in externally sponsored research and over 65 students working as researchers. In a poll of student satisfaction conducted in 2021, the university came in sixth overall. CBU awards nine main admission scholarships based on a student's high school average.

Students with a 90 percent average or higher are eligible for scholarships ranging from $10,000 (Orpha Thayer-Scott) to $24,000 (Chancellor's) over a four-year period. There are also other entrance scholarships ranging from $500 to $2,000 a year.
